Description
Mahogany (scientific name: Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq.): Evergreen large tree, up to 25 meters in height, up to 4 meters in diameter, and expanded into buttresses at the base; the bark is light red, scaly; the branches are extensive, Smooth and gray. The leaf is 35 cm long, with 4-6 pairs of small leaves, dark green on the surface and light green on the underside. Panicles are axillary, 6-15 cm long, glabrous, stalked, with sparse and short branches; petals are white, glabrous, 3-4 mm long, widely spread. The capsule is large, ovate, and woody; there are many seeds, 18 mm long, and even wings 7 cm long. Flowering period from May to June, fruiting period from October to November.
It is native to South America and is now cultivated in all tropical regions. Can be used as sidewalk trees, campus trees, garden trees, etc. Mahogany is a high-quality raw material for making high-end furniture, and it is one of the world's precious woods. It is the national tree of the Dominican Republic.
