Description

Our premium Chinese date seeds are selected from fully mature high-quality jujube fruits with plump kernels and strong germination activity. Botanically named Ziziphus jujuba, commonly known as jujube or red date, it is a highly adaptable deciduous perennial fruit tree native to China. It bears small yellow clustered flowers in late spring, and nutrient-rich sweet red jujubes ripen in autumn.
Chinese date trees boast outstanding cold resistance and exceptional drought tolerance, adapting well to barren hillsides, sandy soil and arid climates. Seeds have physiological dormancy and need low-temperature sand stratification to break dormancy for smooth germination. Seed-grown jujube seedlings can bear stable fruits after 3–5 years of growth. Widely used for commercial jujube orchard economic planting, villa courtyard single tree landscaping, mountain slope soil-fixing greening, roadside windbreak belts and barren land ecological restoration. It favors deep, loose, well-drained slightly alkaline loam soil, and waterlogged low-lying terrain is absolutely prohibited. Daily maintenance includes proper watering in the growing season, annual pruning to open the canopy for light transmission, root mulching for winter frost protection and simple pest prevention, which is an excellent dual-purpose tree for fruit production and ecological greening.

Planting Instructions

  1. Soil Preparation: Choose deep, loose, breathable sandy loam soil with good drainage capacity, add decomposed organic fertilizer to improve soil fertility. Avoid heavy clay soil and depressions prone to water accumulation to prevent root rot.
  2. Seed Pre-treatment: Remove the hard pits from ripe jujubes and clean thoroughly, soak in clean water for 48 hours, then mix with moist river sand for 60–90 days cold stratification at 2–5°C to break deep dormancy. Outdoor autumn direct sowing can complete natural stratification via winter low temperature.
  3. Sowing Method: Bury stratified seeds 3–4 cm deep into the soil, cover fine topsoil and compact lightly, reserve sufficient row spacing for later seedling transplantation.
  4. Germination Condition: Keep the substrate slightly moist without stagnant water, constant germination temperature 15–22°C, seedlings emerge within 15–30 days after stratification treatment.
  5. Daily Maintenance: Water moderately during vigorous growth and drastically reduce watering in winter dormancy period; cover root base with straw or soil for freeze protection in frigid areas every year; prune overlapping inner branches, weak branches and water sprouts annually to boost ventilation and fruiting rate; prevent rodents from damaging seeds and young saplings.

FAQ

Q1: Is cold stratification necessary for jujube seeds?
A1: Yes, jujube seeds have hard shells and deep dormancy. Low-temperature wet sand stratification is a necessary procedure to greatly raise the germination rate.
Q2: How many years do seedling jujube trees take to yield fruits?
A2: Seed-grown jujube trees generally bear fruits in the 3rd to 5th year, grafted jujube saplings can produce fruits much earlier.
Q3: Can Chinese date trees survive in shaded places?
A3: Full sunlight is mandatory all year round. Insufficient light results in few flowers, low fruit set rate and poor fruit quality.
Q4: What is the biggest taboo in jujube cultivation?
A4: Long-term soil waterlogging will cause irreversible root rot; late spring frost may damage young flower buds and reduce annual harvest.
Q5: Is it friendly for beginner gardeners?
A5: Operable for novice growers, the key points are completing low-temperature stratification before sowing and guaranteeing well-drained planting soil.
